Fall Shoes for Women

The Fall Shoe Guide

Fall shoes, chosen by the day you have

One pair for long walks, one for the office, one for tights and one for jeans. Fall asks more of a shoe than summer does, so this guide sorts the season by the day ahead rather than by the trend. Handcrafted boots, clogs, wedges and Mary Janes, from $199.

Quick Summary

The best fall shoes for women are closed, grounded and easy to wear with the clothes autumn brings back, tights, socks, jeans and longer skirts. An ankle boot with a front zip or elastic sides covers most days. A mid-calf boot carries skirts and slim jeans. A clog or a closed wedge gives you height you can walk in, and a low-heeled Mary Jane works with tights at the office. Choose the heel for the hours you will spend standing, choose suede or leather for the weather you expect, and pick colors that repeat across your wardrobe. Antelope handcrafts all six pairs in this guide, from $199 to $239, in US sizes 5 to 10.

Fall is the season when shoes start working harder. Mornings are cold and afternoons can be warm, pavements are wet one day and dry the next, and the clothes change, with tights, socks, denim and longer hems coming back. A good pair of fall shoes for women has to handle all of that. Most women do not need a closet full of new styles. They need two or three pairs that cover the days they actually have.

The Short Answer

Build your fall shoes for women around the day ahead. For walking and errands, an ankle boot with a stacked heel and a rubber sole. For the office, a Chelsea boot or a low-heeled Mary Jane. For skirts and tights, a mid-calf boot or a closed wedge. For weekends, a clog mule. Choose leather for rainy days and suede for softness, keep the heel at 2 inches or below for long days on your feet, and pick black, cognac, camel or taupe so one pair goes with most of what you own.

We write this guide from the workshop side. Antelope is an American footwear house in Stamford, Connecticut, and every pair below is handcrafted in suede or leather. Every zip, panel, heel and insole described here is taken from the shoes themselves and from our own photographs of them on the foot.

What Are the Best Fall Shoes for Women?

The best fall shoes for women are closed shoes that work with tights, socks and jeans, ankle and Chelsea boots, clogs, closed wedges and Mary Janes.

Sandals and open mules step back in September, and what replaces them has to cover the toes, stay on the foot through a long walk and sit comfortably under the heavier hems of fall clothing. Five shapes do that well. The table matches each one to the day it suits and to the pair that represents it in this guide.

Shape What defines it Best for In this guide
Front-zip ankle boot Ends at the ankle and opens down the front Walking, errands, jeans O60 Jordan
Chelsea boot Elastic side panels, nothing to fasten The office, leggings, cropped trousers O65 Jane
Mid-calf boot A pull-on shaft that ends below the widest part of the calf Skirts, dresses, slim jeans M64 Colbie
Clog mule Closed toe, open back, platform sole Weekends, wide trousers U07 Jada
Closed wedge or Mary Jane A closed toe on a wedge or a low heel, held by a strap Tights, dresses, office days Q42 Drea, M77 Gigi

Most women build the season around one boot and one shoe. If you buy only one pair, choose an ankle boot with a heel you can walk in, because it goes with jeans, trousers, leggings and dresses with tights. Then add a shoe for the days a boot feels too warm.

Fall Boots for Women: Ankle, Chelsea or Mid-Calf

Fall boots for women divide by how high the shaft rises and how the boot goes on. Both decide what you can wear with it and how quickly you can be out of the door.

The front-zip ankle boot

A front zip is the quickest closure to use and the easiest to fit over a high instep, because the opening runs down the front of the foot. The O60 Jordan pairs it with a square toe, which gives the toes more room than a point, and a 3 inch stacked heel. Soft distressed suede gives it a worn-in look from the first day, and a non-slip rubber sole sits underneath. If you are looking for fall ankle boots that go with everything from black jeans to a knit dress, this is the shape. Our guide to suede ankle boots covers the style in more depth.

Woman seated on a stone ledge in a grey beanie and black leather trousers, wearing Antelope O60 Jordan black suede front-zip ankle boots

Worn with black leather trousers and a beanie, as above, it is the boot for a cold morning. With a knit dress and opaque tights it becomes the boot for an evening out, which is why fall ankle boots are the first pair most women buy each September.

The Chelsea boot

A Chelsea boot has elastic side panels instead of laces or a zip. You pull it on, the elastic stretches, and the boot closes around the ankle by itself. The reference entry on the Chelsea boot traces it to the Victorian era, when the design was credited to the bootmaker Joseph Sparkes Hall and made possible by vulcanised rubber, and notes its return in the 1950s and 1960s on London's King's Road. The O65 Jane sets the elastic into the seam beneath the suede, adds a pointed toe and a 3 inch heel, and lets the shaft rise just above the ankle, so it sits cleanly under cropped trousers.

Because the toe is pointed, check that the widest part of your foot meets the widest part of the boot. The point itself extends beyond your toes, so the length you feel at the tip is not the length that matters.

The mid-calf boot

A mid-calf boot covers more of the leg, which makes it the boot for skirts and dresses on cooler days. The M64 Colbie is a pull-on boot in hand-brushed camel leather, with pull tabs to help it on and no hardware on the shaft. The shaft finishes below the widest part of the calf. A 1.5 inch stacked block heel and a contoured cushioned insole make it the lowest heel in this guide. If you are choosing between lengths, our comparison of mid calf vs knee high boots explains what each one does with a skirt.

The three boots side by side

Boot Material How it goes on Shaft Heel Price
O60 Jordan Distressed suede Front zip Ankle 3 inch stacked $239
O65 Jane Suede Elastic side panels Just above the ankle 3 inch $239
M64 Colbie Hand-brushed leather Pull-on, with pull tabs Mid-calf 1.5 inch stacked block $239

All three fall boots for women come in US sizes 5 to 10. For a wider range of heights and colors, see our edit of women's leather boots, and for shorter styles our guide to fall booties.

Fall Shoe Finder Quiz

Your Fall Pair

Question 1 of 3

What does a typical day ask of your shoes?

Whichever pair the quiz suggests, see how a boot looks from every side before you choose. The short clip below turns the M61 Celeste, a mid-calf boot in hand-brushed taupe leather, so you can see the braided seam, the shaft and the stacked block heel all the way round.

Tall Leather Boots for Women Braided Seam Detail #Shorts

The M61 Celeste in hand-brushed taupe leather, filmed from every angle. Watch the braided seam on the shaft, the mid-calf height and the stacked block heel.

  • Hand-brushed taupe leather upper
  • Braided seam along the shaft
  • Rises to mid-calf
  • 1.5 inch stacked block heel
  • Plush cushioned footbed
Shop the boots collection →

The braided seam is the detail to watch in that clip. It runs the full length of the shaft and is worked by hand rather than stitched flat, and the low stacked block heel keeps the weight from tipping forward, which is why the Celeste wears as easily with a midi dress as with cropped trousers.

Comfortable Fall Shoes for Women

Comfortable fall shoes for women share three things, a heel you can walk in, cushioning under the foot and a toe with room. Fall adds a fourth, a sole that holds on wet leaves and pavements.

The heel ladder

Heel height decides how many hours a shoe is wearable. Every inch of heel moves more of your weight onto the ball of the foot, and the shape of the heel decides how steady you feel. A stacked or block heel puts a broad base on the ground. A wedge spreads the lift along the whole sole. A platform raises the front of the foot as well, so the angle your foot sits at is gentler than the heel height suggests.

Pair Heel Underfoot Price
M64 Colbie 1.5 inch stacked block Contoured cushioned insole $239
Q42 Drea 2 inch mid wedge Padded insole $199
M77 Gigi 2 inch sculpted heel Padded insole $199
O60 Jordan 3 inch stacked Cushioned insole, non-slip rubber sole $239
O65 Jane 3 inch Padded insole $239
U07 Jada 3 inch on a platform Cushioned footbed $199

If you will be on your feet most of the day, start at the top of that table. The M64 Colbie at 1.5 inches and the two 2 inch pairs are the comfortable fall shoes for women who walk to work or stand for hours. The 3 inch boots stand on stacked heels rather than slim ones, and the U07 Jada adds a platform, so all three stay walkable for an evening or a day with less walking.

Fit for fall

Fall shoes are worn over thicker socks and tights than summer shoes, so fit them with what you will wear. Try boots on late in the day, when feet are at their largest, in the socks or tights you plan to wear with them, and fit the larger of your two feet. Your heel should not lift as you walk across a hard floor, and the widest part of your foot should meet the widest part of the shoe. Every pair here comes in US sizes 5 to 10, and if the first size is wrong, your first exchange is free.

Suede and Leather in Fall Weather

Most fall shoes for women are made in one of two materials, and the difference matters more in October than it does in July.

Suede. The reference entry on suede explains why it feels so soft. It is made from the underside of the skin, which gives the nap its velvet finish, and it is softer and less durable than full-grain leather. It also absorbs liquids. That does not make suede a fair-weather material, but it does mean a protector spray before the first wear and a dry brush after a wet day. Soap and water are the wrong tools. A suede brush and a suede rubber lift marks and restore the nap, and our guide on how to care for suede sets out the full routine.

Hand-brushed leather. Leather is the material for days you expect rain. The M64 Colbie, the U07 Jada and the M77 Gigi are hand-brushed, which gives the leather a slightly uneven depth of color that reads as made rather than manufactured. Leather wipes clean with a damp cloth and softens to the shape of the foot over the first weeks of wear.

Cognac suede, like the O65 Jane above, is the warmest-looking color in this guide. Like any suede, it is worth spraying before the first wet day and brushing once it has dried.

Clogs and Closed Wedges for Fall

Not every fall day calls for a boot. On a mild afternoon, or under wide trousers, a clog or a closed wedge gives you height you can walk in without the warmth of a shaft around the ankle.

The clog mule

A clog mule closes over the toes and leaves the back open, so it slips on and off. The U07 Jada is cut in hand-brushed artisan leather with a hand-stitched moccasin vamp, the stitched front you know from a loafer, set on a platform sole with a 3 inch heel height and a cushioned footbed. Clogs have become a fall staple rather than a summer one, and our guide to clogs for fall 2026 covers the wider category. If you prefer a sleeker open-back shoe, see our edit of black mule shoes.

The closed wedge

A wedge spreads its height along the whole sole, which is why women who find heels tiring often find a wedge easy. The Q42 Drea closes over the toes for fall and holds the heel with a slingback strap, on a 2 inch mid wedge with a padded insole. In taupe suede it reads as a neutral with camel and cream, and in black it goes with tights and dark denim. For more wedge shapes, see our guide to fall wedge shoes.

Antelope Q42 Drea closed-toe slingback wedges in taupe suede, worn on a wooden deck

The slingback is what makes a closed wedge work in fall. It holds the heel without a full back, so the shoe stays light, and the closed toe keeps it wearable with tights once the mornings turn cold.

Fall Shoes for Work

Fall shoes for work have to look polished with tailoring, stay comfortable through a day at a desk and the walk either side of it, and go with tights as the weather cools. Three shapes do that.

The Chelsea boot. A sleek suede Chelsea boot like the O65 Jane in black sits cleanly under trousers that end at the ankle, and the elastic sides mean there is nothing to fasten in the morning.

The low-heeled Mary Jane. The M77 Gigi in hand-brushed leather is the alternative to a pump. A buckle strap set with brass eyelets crosses the foot at its width, on a 2 inch sculpted heel with a padded insole. With opaque tights and a skirt, it is the most traditional office look in this guide, and our guide on how to wear Mary Janes goes further.

Antelope M77 Gigi black leather Mary Jane with buckle strap and 2 inch sculpted heel

The closed wedge. On days with a lot of walking between meetings, the Q42 Drea in black suede gives the same 2 inches of lift on a wedge.

Whichever fall shoes for work you choose, a darker color, black or cognac, is the safest choice for a formal office, with camel and taupe for the days that are more relaxed. Our wider guide to comfortable work shoes covers loafers and pumps as well.

Shoes to Wear With Tights

Tights come back in October, and they change which shoes look right. The best shoes to wear with tights are closed and keep the line of the leg unbroken.

Ankle boots. Matching the boot to the tights, black on black, makes the leg look longest. Black suede fall ankle boots over black opaque tights with a knit dress are the simplest outfit of the season. Our guide to ankle boots with dresses covers hem lengths in detail.

Mid-calf boots. With a midi skirt, a mid-calf boot leaves only a few inches of tights showing, which keeps the outfit warm and the line of the leg continuous.

Mary Janes and closed wedges. These are the shoes to wear with tights when a boot feels too heavy. Opaque tights in the color of the shoe lengthen the leg, and a contrasting color makes the shoe the point of the outfit. Thin ankle socks worn over tights are a fall look of their own, and our guide on how to style shoes with socks shows how to wear them.

Fit with tights in mind. A shoe that fits a bare foot can feel snug over thick tights, so try it on with the tights you will wear. Two of the shoes to wear with tights in this guide, the M77 Gigi and the Q42 Drea, hold the heel with a strap, which helps on a smooth knit.

Fall Shoes With Jeans

Jeans are the one thing most women wear all season, so fall shoes with jeans need the most thought. Let the hem decide.

Cropped and straight jeans. A hem that ends at the ankle bone shows the top of an ankle boot. The O60 Jordan with black jeans, or the O65 Jane in cognac with blue, is the easiest pairing in this guide.

Wide-leg jeans. A wider hem covers the shaft of a boot, so the toe and the heel do the work. A platform holds its own under a wide leg, which makes the U07 Jada the clog to try.

Slim jeans. Slim jeans tuck into a mid-calf boot such as the M64 Colbie, which turns denim and a knit into a riding-boot outfit.

Leggings. Black leather leggings, as in our photographs of the O60 Jordan and the O65 Jane, look sharpest with an ankle boot that meets the hem.

Whatever the jeans, match the boot to the darker of your two colors, the denim or the top, and fall shoes with jeans look deliberate rather than an afterthought.

Fall Shoe Colors

Fall shoe colors are warmer and deeper than summer's, and the right ones repeat across a wardrobe, so one pair goes with most of it.

Black. The workhorse. Black goes with every pair of dark tights and black jeans, and four of the six pairs here come in it, the O60 Jordan, the O65 Jane, the Q42 Drea and the M77 Gigi.

Cognac and tan. The warm browns of the season. Cognac suede on the O65 Jane and tan leather on the U07 Jada go with blue denim, camel and cream.

Camel. A soft mid-brown that sits well with navy, grey and cream. The M64 Colbie comes in camel, and so does the M77 Gigi.

Mocha, coffee and taupe. The quieter neutrals. Mocha suede on the O60 Jordan and coffee leather on the U07 Jada are softer than black, and taupe suede on the Q42 Drea is the lightest of the fall shoe colors in this guide.

If you are buying one pair, black or a mid-brown like cognac covers the most outfits. If you already own black, add a brown for contrast with denim. Between those two, the fall shoe colors above go with almost everything in an autumn wardrobe.

Frequently Asked Questions

What shoes do women wear in the fall?

Closed shoes that work with tights, socks and jeans. Ankle boots and Chelsea boots cover most days, mid-calf boots go with skirts, and clogs, closed wedges and Mary Janes cover the days a boot feels too warm.

What are the most comfortable fall shoes for women?

Comfortable fall shoes for women have a heel of 2 inches or less, a block, stacked or wedge base, a cushioned insole and a toe with room. In this guide, the M64 Colbie at 1.5 inches and the Q42 Drea and M77 Gigi at 2 inches are the lowest.

What are the best fall boots for women?

An ankle boot is the most versatile, because it goes with jeans, trousers and dresses with tights. A Chelsea boot is the easiest to put on, and a mid-calf boot is the one for skirts. Most women own one of each type of fall boots for women within a few seasons.

Can you wear suede in the rain?

Suede absorbs liquids, so treat it with a protector spray before the first wear and brush it once it has dried after a wet day. Avoid soap and water. On days you expect heavy rain, a leather pair is the better choice.

What shoes go with tights?

The best shoes to wear with tights are closed. Ankle boots matched to the color of the tights lengthen the leg, mid-calf boots suit midi skirts, and Mary Janes and closed wedges work when a boot feels too heavy.

What fall shoes go with jeans?

Let the hem decide. Cropped and straight jeans show the top of an ankle boot, wide-leg jeans suit a platform or a clog, and slim jeans tuck into a mid-calf boot. Those three cover most fall shoes with jeans.

Are clogs good for fall?

Yes. A clog mule with a closed toe and a leather upper is warm enough for mild fall days, easy to wear with socks, and holds its own under wide trousers and jeans.

What heel height is comfortable all day?

For most women, 2 inches or less on a block, stacked or wedge base. A platform makes a taller heel easier, because it raises the front of the foot as well and the angle is gentler.

What colors are best for fall shoes?

Black, cognac, camel, mocha, coffee and taupe. Black covers the most outfits, and a mid-brown such as cognac is the best second pair. Those fall shoe colors repeat across most autumn wardrobes.

Are Chelsea boots comfortable?

They are easy to wear because there is nothing to fasten, and the elastic side panels flex with the ankle as you walk. Choose one with a padded insole and a heel you can walk in, and check that the widest part of your foot meets the widest part of the boot.

What are good fall shoes for work?

A sleek suede Chelsea boot, a low-heeled Mary Jane with tights, or a closed wedge for days with more walking. Dark colors such as black and cognac are the safest fall shoes for work in a formal office.

How much do these fall shoes cost, and what if they don't fit?

The six pairs in this guide cost $199 to $239. Shipping is free in the US on orders of $80 and up, orders can be returned within 30 days, and your first exchange is free.
